TIME LAPSE! XP470 ENGINE INSTALL IN A CESSNA 180K

This Cessna 180K was modified with P.Ponk Aviation's O-470-50 engine. P.Ponk took a stock 230 horsepower Continental O-470 engine and modified the crank and case to accept 520 cylinders, changing the displacement from 470 to 520 cubic inches and increasing the horsepower to 285. This mod was approved for Cessna 180's and 182's starting in the early 90's. It was, and still is, a popular modification to increase performance.

Between 2019 and 2020, P.Ponk Aviation sold their O-470-50 STC to NorthPoint Aviation, which now markets the conversion as the NorthPoint XP470. The new conversion consists of modifying a stock Continental IO-520-D engine by removing the fuel injection system, installing a modified carburetor and exchanging the oil pan for the original oil pan installed on the Cessna 180 and 182. The XP470 engine is also rated at 285 horsepower.

Unfortunately, this O-470-50 engine sang its last song when it came into the shop with low cylinder compression. The #1 cylinder was removed for replacement, but an internal visual inspection of the engine discovered the camshaft and lifters were heavily damaged from spalling. Instead of removing the O-470-50 engine and sending it out for overhaul, the owner elected to upgrade to the new NorthPoint XP470 engine and a few other upgrades, such as a new Airforms Baffle kit, Tanis Preheater kit, and overhauling the propeller.

This video is a Time Lapse of removing the P.Ponk Aviation O-470-50 engine and installing the new NorthPoint Aviation XP470 engine. Enjoy!
